The Importance of the English Language in a Child’s Development
If your child is born and raised in an English-speaking country, they will naturally develop English fluency, yet for many parents, English is perhaps the most important skill for their child to acquire. Let’s take Bangkok, for example, where a Thai family lives; if they wanted their child to acquire the English language, the best solution would be to enroll the child in an international school. This would expose the child to English for 5-6 hours per day, as every subject is taught in English, and by mixing with children from other backgrounds, the Thai child would very quickly attain a native-speaking level in their English.
Start Early
The human brain is astounding in many ways and introducing a new language should be done as soon as possible. There are many examples when a child is learning 3 different language at the same time; a child with a French father and a Thai mother who are living in Thailand, for example, would be learning to speak Thai, French from their mother and English from the international school environment. By the time the child reaches the age of 15, they would have a good command of all three languages, providing that the language input is consistent.
International Schools
If you want to be sure that your child will develop a level of fluency in English, enrolling them into an international school in Bangkok is the best solution, and within a couple of years, your son or daughter will be using English as much, if not more, than their native tongue. All lessons are conducted in English, plus the students all prefer to use English when communicating with each other and the teachers and staff.
Looking to the Future
The English language has been chosen as the international language and with the global nature of the digital world we live in today, English is an essential requirement, as without it, the child is rather limited with career choices. Children all over the world are being enrolled in international schools for this very reason, and when a child reaches the age of 16, learning a language becomes very difficult, which is why you should introduce English at the earliest opportunity.
Home Language Learning
If you have a reasonable level of English, you can use the language at home with your child. Start with simple things like, ‘eat your food’, ‘you can watch TV’, or indeed any commands, as this will help the child to become accustomed to English.
